Alumni Stories: Michael Gillis '12

"I spent a year out in New York City working jobs in publishing and journalism while chipping in comedy pieces here and there. Eventually, that led to a position at The Onion. Now I'm the head writer there. Outside of writing the odd humor piece about a topic related to neuroscience, I can't say that I've used my cognitive science major too intensively, although I still read quite a bit in the field and love talking about it with anyone who's interested. I also think it's influenced my understanding of comedy, allowing me to take an evolutionary psychology-based perspective on my work and discuss it in a more eclectic fashion than if I'd only majored in creative writing."
