Welcome New Cognitive Science Program Faculty

In summer 2026, Emily Cooper, Associate Professor and Fred Callaway, Assistant Professor will be joining the faculty at Dartmouth College in the Cognitive Science Program.

Emily's research examines the mechanisms and phenomenology of human visual perception, with a particular emphasis on perception of three-dimensional space. The long-term goal of her research is to understand how 3D vision functions in the natural environment, and to apply these scientific insights to make perceptually meaningful improvements to vision care. Her expertise is 3D vision, depth perception, computational neuroscience, augmented and virtual reality, assistive technology

Fred's research aims to understand how human thought processes are jointly shaped by the structure of the external world and our internal cognitive constraints. This involves developing computational models grounded in decision theory and reinforcement learning, and, collecting rich behavioral measures like eye- and mouse-tracking. Some questions he plans to pursue in his lab include: How do we know "where" to search for a memory? Why do some people fixate on unlikely risks while others ignore likely ones? How do people detect when they're not thinking about a problem the right way?
